There’s something special about a day at the races, and the Virginia Derby in New Kent did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, the energy, style, and excitement made it clear this is one of the area’s standout spring events.
We were invited by Routten & Laster Law PLLC, a closing company we work with often, and we are so grateful. Huge thanks to them and everyone involved in putting this event together — it was incredibly well done and such a fun experience for all who attended.
We spent most of our time in the dining pavilion, which offered a perfect mix of comfort and atmosphere. It was a great place to connect with both familiar faces and newcomers, all while enjoying a delicious buffet that kept everyone coming back for more. Between bites, we found ourselves watching the crowd, complimenting the extravagant outfits, and soaking in the overall experience.
One of the highlights of the day was definitely the fashion. Dressing up is part of the tradition, and it was so much fun to get into the spirit of the Derby. Everywhere you looked, people were dressed to the nines — bold hats, colorful dresses, sharp suits — adding to the festive and upscale feel of the event.
For those new to horse racing, the race program book was a great touch. It was easy to follow and provided helpful insight into how everything works, making it approachable even for first-time attendees.
Even though the weather was a bit on the chilly side, the energy of the crowd never dropped. The excitement of the races, the social atmosphere, and the overall experience kept things lively all day long.
Events like the Virginia Derby are a great reminder of the lifestyle and experiences available just outside Williamsburg. From unique local traditions to well-organized community events, there’s always something happening nearby that brings people together.
